First of all I’m sorry for not discovering this movie earlier. This is the internet: a vast chaos in which we try to figure out some order. Anyways, … what you’re about to see (in case you haven’t yet) is- in my opinion-the most beautiful visual-poetry I have ever seen. It’s a documentary directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand talking about the irreversible damage made by humans to this planet. I’m not going to refer to the message it sends or to it’s editorial content, although those are really powerful also.

What amazed me was the way it combines the image with the music and the story. There are only one or two moments in the entire 1 hour and 22 minutes when the camera isn’t moving. The rest of the movie is moving continuously, everything is fluid, the pictures are taken from above as if you are God itself, witnessing the human show.

The music is by far highly emotional, primitive yet noble. Armand Amar, the composer, made several journeys to record with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Percussion Ensemble. He move into his score chants and instruments from several continents (Mongolia, Armenia, Iran, etc).

Despite it’s terrible truth, the movie is told like a dream story, like a majestic symphony. If you pause the movie at a random minute, for instance, you could very well use the still picture as a wallpaper or as a frame to remember.

This fantastic work got the attention and recognition of everyone on Vimeo. It really blows everyones minds!!!
What really amazed me was the technique used to make it. Someone guessed that it was done with 3Ds Max, Vray, FumeFX and Krakatoa but the answer came quickly “It’s just After Effects and Particular.”
This is the perfect example of 1% perspiration and 99% of inspiration.

I’m not gonna told you what this movie is all about – ’cause I don’t want to spoil it’s story – but I do want to tell you this: the idea behind it … i found it fabulous ! What if we were born old and die young? What if we love someone who looks like 3 years old but has 80? You’ll witness 3 births in the movie, incredible drama due to a odd yet innocent life experience.

The distractions to the astonishing tale are mostly technical — the level of art direction is so high that it sometimes almost pulls you out of the plot. Scenes in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, particularly, are exquisitely mounted and detailed at a level I’ve never before seen in a movie. Vast scenes are mounted — war scenes, events in cities and towns with huge numbers of celebrants, exteriors on the sea, in the snow, in wonderful old towns with every detail in place, leaving you — or me, at least — utterly dazzled.

Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are outstanding character actors, though they’re invariably positioned as Hollywood glamour figures. That’s just a distraction; they’re terrific technical actors, capable of a great range of characters and complex scenes. And they’re both tremendously empathetic: one feels what they’re depicting. There’s nothing magical about that, they’re just highly skilled, and thoroughly deserve the positions they’ve achieved in the film world. This title was made for them: complicated, filled with inner contradictions, and of course there’s the age range — we see their lives spanning decades.

Indicative of the careful and detailed production is the way, early on, that historic scenes are presented. Rather than simply cutting back to earlier times, the film presents scenes from the teens and early 20’s as though they were old movies, complete with erratic exposure and scratched emulsion. BUT they are in (rather washed-out) color. It works. You feel as though you are seeing authentic moments from a much earlier time.

Bolt, an American White Shepherd, has lived his whole life on the set of his action TV show, where he believes he has superpowers. When separated from the studio by accident, he meets a female alley cat named Mittens and a hamster named Rhino. Along the way, he learns that he doesn’t have superpowers and that the show is not real.
